the current study suggested an underlying mechanism that miR (show MLXIP Antibodies)-21 directly target HEPN1 and inhibit its expression during the carcinogenesis of HCC (show FAM126A Antibodies). HEPN1 may thus be a candidate as a therapeutic target for patients with HCC (show FAM126A Antibodies).
ROS (show ROS1 Antibodies) increase production of an alternately spliced form of X-box binding protein 1 (show XBP1 Antibodies) (XBP1s) and XBP1s increases HEPN1 expression by binding to the HEPN1 promoter
HEPN1 silencing increased MMP-2 (show MMP2 Antibodies), MMP-9 (show MMP9 Antibodies), and Bcl-2 (show BCL2 Antibodies) expression, but decreased BAX (show BAX Antibodies), p53 (show TP53 Antibodies), and caspase-3 (show CASP3 Antibodies) expression.
This gene is expressed in the liver, and encodes a short peptide that is localized predominantly to the cytoplasm. Transient transfection studies showed that expression of this gene significantly inhibited cell growth, and it may have a role in apoptosis. Expression of this gene is downregulated or lost in hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC), suggesting that loss of this gene is involved in carcinogenesis of hepatocytes (PMID:12971969). Also to note is that this gene maps to the 3'-noncoding region of HEPACAM gene (GeneID:220296) on the antisense strand (PMID:15885354).
