Evolutionary analysis suggests that human PRDM7 and PRDM9 (show PRDM9 Antibodies) genes, a pair of close paralogs corresponding to a single mouse gene Prdm9 (show PRDM9 Antibodies), were generated by a recent gene duplication event after the divergence of the ancestors of human and mouse.
The protein encoded by this gene is a transcription factor of the PR-domain protein family. It contains a PR-domain and multiple zinc finger motifs. Transcription factors of the PR-domain family are known to be involved in cell differentiation and tumorigenesis. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms.
