| Description | Background: G1/S-specific cyclin-D1 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the CCND1 gene. Cyclin D1 belongs to the core cell cycle machinery, and it is frequently overexpressed in human cancers. 1 Cyclin D1 encodes the regulatory subunit of a holoenzyme that phosphorylates and inactivates the retinoblastoma protein and promotes progression through the G1-S phase of the cell cycle. CCND1 associates with and regulates transcription factors, coactivators, and corepressors that govern histone acetylation and chromatin remodeling proteins. CCND1 also has roles in cellular growth, metabolism, and cellular differentiation. Amplification or overexpression of cyclin D1 plays pivotal roles in the development of a subset of human cancers including parathyroid adenoma, breast cancer, colon cancer, lymphoma, melanoma, and prostate cancer. |
