Description
|
Epithelial cell-cell junctions serve to link the cadherin to actin microfilaments or the intermediate filament cytoskeleton and are important for tissue integrity. Desmosomes are one of the main adhesive junctions in epithelial tissues. Two members of the cadherin family of proteins, desmogleins and desmocolins that are linked to intermediate filament cytoskeleton through interactions with .-catenin, desmoplakin and plakophilin family of proteins. In the skin, the three desmogleins (desmoglein-1, -2 and -3) are expressed in a stratification dependent manner, and therefore contribute to compositionally different desmosomes throughout the differentiating layers.
