Description
Arylalkylamine N-Acetyltransferase (AANAT) is the penultimate enzyme is melatoninsynthesis. Hormonal melatonin has been implicated in sleep and circadian clockfunction, and acts asthe hormone of the night. Large changes in theabundance of AANAT are believed to be responsible for the large day/night rhythms inmelatonin synthesis in the pineal gland and retina (1,2).Most research shows that AANAT activity is regulated by controlling the steady-statelevels of the protein. Recent research, however, suggests that another mechanism mayalso play a role in controlling melatonin production without altering AANAT protein andactivity. This mechanism may explain the sudden physiological increase in circulatingmelatonin observed at the onset of the dark period in humans (3). Alternate Names: anti-Arylalkamine N-Acetyltransferase antibody, anti-Serotonin-N-Acetyltransferaseantibody, anti-SNAT antibody.

Specificity
This antibody is specific for primate AANAT (3,4). Species Reactivity: Recognizes human and rhesus AANAT. It does not recognize rat, ovine, chicken orzebrafish AANAT.

Buffer
Immunopurified rabbit antiserum (100 ul). The peptide (hAANAT1-26) was bound tostrips of PVDF membrane. The antiserum was eluted in 0.1N glacial acetic acidcontaining 0.1% BSA and neutralized using 10X PBS containing NaOH to a final pH of6.8.
