Description
|
UPC4 also known as mitochondrial uncoupling protein 4 is a 36 kD member of the mitochondrial anion carrier protein family. UPC4 is expressed in mitochondria exclusively in the adult and fetal brain. UPC4 facilitates transfer of anions from the inner to the outer mitochondrial membrane and the return of protons from the outer to the inner mitochondrial membrane. This reduces mitochondrial membrane potential and induces mitochondrial leak in which oxidative phosphorylation is separated from ATP synthesis with energy dissipated as heat. UPC4 has been shown to be increased by diet, temperature, and various environmental conditions. The Poly6161 antibody recognizes the N-terminal region of UPC4 and has been shown to be useful for Western blotting. Distribution: Mitochondria. Expressed exclusively in fetal and adult brain Function: Facilitates transfer of anions from inner to outer mitochondrial membrane and the return of protons from the outer to the inner mitochondrial membrane. This reduces mitochondrial membrane potential and induces mitochondrial leak in which oxidative phosphorylation is separated from ATP synthesis with energy dissipated as heat. Synonyms: Mitochondrial uncoupling protein 4, Uncoupling protein 4 Regulation: Increased by diet, temperature, and various environmental conditions Structure: Mitochondrial anion carrier protein family (MACP), 36 kD
