Description
Gene: Parainfluenza Virus 3
Specificity
Recognizes an epitope within the hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) protein of parainfluenza virus 3 (HPIV-3), an enveloped single-stranded RNA virus of the Paramyxoviridae family. Parainfluenza viruses are genetically and antigenically divided into the four types HPIV1-4, with HPIV-1, -2 and -3 being major causative agents of lower respiratory infections in the young and immunologically vulnerable. The HN protein of all HPIV, is a 69-82kD surface glycoprotein which mediates the attachment of the virus to the host cell, through binding to cell surface sialic acid-containing receptors. The receptor-cleaving neuraminidase activity of HN is essential for further infection by HPIV, by ensuring the release of progeny virions. Can be used in IFA typing studies in conjunction for the detection of parainfluenza virus types 1, 2 and 3.
