Background DARPP-32 is a 32 kDa protein phosphatase which modulates cell signalling in neurons. It is converted into an inhibitor of protein phosphatase-1 when it is phosphorylated by protein kinase A as a result of dopaminergic receptor stimulation. However this phosphorylation is reversed on stimulation of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors by glutamate. Conversely when phosphorylated at threonine-75 by CDK5, DARPP-32 becomes an inhibitor of protein kinase A. DARPP-32 has been linked to gastric cancer. The phosphatase is highly expressed in the nucleus accumbens, caudate nucleus, cerebellar cortex and putamen, being expressed at lower levels in the neocortical regions.Synonyms: DARPP-32, Dopamine- and cAMP-regulated neuronal phosphoprotein, FLJ20940, PPP1R1B, Protein phosphatase 1 regulatory subunit 1B
