    Background
PPARD is a member of the nuclear hormone receptor subfamily. Upon activation, PPARD forms heterodimers with retinoid X receptors (RXRs), and functions to regulate transcription of specific gene sequences. PPARD controls genes involved in lipid metabolism, and enhances fatty acid catabolism and energy uncoupling in adipose tissue and skeletal muscle. PPARD has also been implicated in the proliferation and differentiation of preadipocytes, enterocytes, keratinocytes and the placenta. PPARD agonists could be used therapeutically to target multiple components of the metabolic syndrome, including insulin resistance, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and atherosclerosis.Synonyms: NR1C2, NUCI, Nuclear hormone receptor 1, Nuclear receptor subfamily 1 group C member 2, PPAR-beta, PPARB, PPARD, Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor delta
