Description
The structure of the protein encoded by this gene is highly related to both the protein ankyrin andtransmembrane proteins. The specific function of this protein has not yet been determined; however, studies indicate the function may involve a role in signal transduction and growth control. FUNCTION: Receptor-activated non-selective cation channel involved in detection of sensations such as cold, pain or sounds perception. Has a central role in the pain response to endogenous inflammatory mediators and to a diverse array of volatile irritants, such as mustard oil, garlic and acrolein, an irritant from tears gas and vehicule exhaust fumes. Also involved in pain sensation triggered by capsaicin, the pungent ingredient in chilli peppers. Acts also as a ionotropic cannabinoid receptor by being activated by delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component of marijuana. Not involved in menthol sensation. May be a component for the mechanosensitive transduction channel of hair cells in inner ear, thereby participating in the perception of sounds. Probably operated by a phosphatidylinositol second messenger system. SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein (Probable). TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Expressed at very low level. Expressed at very low level in human fibroblasts and at a moderate level in liposarcoma cells. MISCELLANEOUS: Inhibited by ruthenium red, a potent blocker of TRPV channels. Also known as: Transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily A member 1, ankyrin-like withtransmembrane domains protein 1, transformation sensitive protein p120, ANKTM1.

Storage
Maintain the lyophilised/reconstituted antibodies frozen at -20°C for long term storage and refrigerated at 2-8°C for a shorter term. When reconstituting, glycerol (1:1) may be added for an additional stability. Avoid freeze and thaw cycles.
