The Dscam gene encodes a large family of axon guidance receptors and immune receptors via alternative splicing, generating over 38000 isoforms. The gene has been shown to be required for axon guidance, specifically targeting individual neurons to their targets. The gene has also been shown to be involved in the immune system of the fly, different isoforms interact with different pathogens to elicit an immune response. Dscam is a cell adhesion molecule that can mediate cation-independent homophilic binding activity.Synonyms: CHD2, Down syndrome cell adhesion molecule
