    Background
Syntenin is an approximately 33 kDa scaffolding protein that that binds to kainate receptor subunits via a PDZ interaction. Syntenin has a tightly regulated developmental profile in neurons and is most abundant in the period of intense growth and synapse formation and stabilization (Hirbec et al, 2005). There is extensive colocalization of syntenin and kainate receptors with particularly intense labeling for both proteins at growth cones. It is proposed that syntenin has a role both in controlling membrane organization and in determining the formation and maturation of synapses.Synonyms: MDA-9, MDA9, Melanoma differentiation-associated protein 9, Pro-TGF-alpha cytoplasmic domain-interacting protein 18, SYCL, Scaffold protein Pbp1, Syndecan-binding protein 1, TACIP18
