| Comments |
Background: FK506 binding protein 6 (FKBP6) is a cellular receptor for the immunosuppressants FK506 and rapamycin in the immunophilin FKBP family (1). FKBP's are involved in several biochemical processes including protein folding, receptor signaling, protein trafficking and transcription (2). It forms a complex as FKBP-FK506 to competitively bind to and inhibit the Calcium- and calmodulin-dependent phosphatase calcineurin (3). FKBP6 plays a role in sex-specific fertility as a component of the synaptonemal complex, which is essential for chromosome pairing and meiotic division (4). A genetic deletion in FKBP6 is associated with Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS), a neurodevelopmental disorder (5). |
