Comments

Background: MerTK (c-mer, Nyk, Eyk) is a tyrosine kinase that belongs to a family of transmembrane receptors (1). MerTk has been implicated in reversible cell growth arrest, survival, proliferation and cell adhesion. Growth arrest specific protein 6 (Gas6) is an activating ligand for MerTK (2-3). MerTK is required for clearance of apoptotic cells by mononuclear phagocytes in mice, with its absence resulting in progressive lupus like autoimmunity (4). Defects in MERTK are a cause of retinitis pigmentosa (RP) (5).
