Background: Peroxiredoxins (Prx) are a family of ubiquitous antioxidant enzymes which regulates cytokine-induced peroxide levels and mediates signal transduction in various mammalian cells. Prx family members have been linked to cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis (1). Peroxiredoxin 6 (Prdx6) is only mammalian 1-Cys member of the peroxiredoxin family and it is expressed in all major organs, with particularly high expression in lung. Prdx6 is considered antioxidant enzyme and has a major role in lung phospholipid metabolism. Specifically, Prdx6 might be involved in antioxidant defense by facilitating repair of damaged cell membranes via reduction of peroxidized phospholipids and alterations of lung surfactant phospholipid synthesis and turnover (2). |
