Alternative Name Ikappa B alpha
Background NF-kappaB is a transcription factor that regulates many cytokine and Ig genes involved in immune response, inflammation, and viral infections. NF-kappaB is induced by cytokines and lipopolysaccharide (LPS), but is inhibited by glucocorticoids. IkappaBalpha/MAD-3 inhibits the DNA-binding activity of NF-kappaB and related transcription factors. In THP-1 monocytic-like cells, LPS induces the phosphorylation and inactivation of IkappaBalpha, which results in the activation of NF-kappaB. Therefore, phosphorylation of IkappaBalpha may induce the dissociation of the IkappaBalpha/NF-kappaB complex.
