| Description | Hypoxia contributes significantly to the pathophysiology of major categories of humandisease, including myocardial and cerebral ischemia, cancer, pulmonary hypertension,congenital heart disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. HIF-1, a nuclear protein activating gene transcription in response to reduced cellular 02concentration, activates the transcription of VEGF, EPO, iNOS, heme oxygenase 1 andother intracellular responses critical to hypoxia. HIF-1 is a heterodimer composed ofHIF-1a and HIF-1b subunits. HIF-1 a most closely resembles the Drosophila proteinSim.
