| Description | Corticosterone is a steroid hormone secreted by the outer layer, or cortex, of the adrenal gland . Classed as a glucocorticoid, corticosterone helps regulate the conversion of amino acids into carbohydrates and glycogen by the liver, and helps stimulate glycogen formation in the tissues. Corticosterone is similar in structure, although somewhat less potent, than the other glucocorticoids cortisol and cortisone . It is produced in response to stimulation by the pituitary substance adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). In some species, but not in humans, corticosterone is the predominant glucocorticoid secreted by the adrenal. It is a precursor in the synthesis of aldosterone , another adrenal cortical steroid. Corticosterone Levels 1. Men 420 ? 220 pg/0.1 ml 2. Women Follicular Phase 240 ? 150 pg/0.1 ml Luteal Phase 440 ? 230 pg/0.1 ml 3. Laying Hens 220 ? 50 pg/0.1 ml |
| Specificity | Specificity of the antiserum is defined as the ratio of antigen concentration to cross-reactant concentration at 50% inhibition of maximum binding. The cross-reactivity data obtained in the described-RIA system is as follows:Cross-Reactant %Cross-Reactiv |

| Application | Radioimmunoassay (RIA) |
| Application Notes | RIA: The antiserum is characterized utilizing the following dextran coated charcoal radioimmunoassay (RIA) protocol, where 0.5 ml of reconstituted and diluted antiserum has been found to bind at least 40% of 15 picograms of tritiated (3H) corticosterone with a specific activity of approximately 100 ci/mmole. RIA recommended protocol can be supplied upon request-please send an email to support@genetex.com for further details. |
