Description
|
Mouse interferon gamma is produced by CD4+ and CD8+ T-lymphocytes and NK cells. IFN gamma, found as a homodimer, consists of 136 amino acid residues with a molecular weight of 16 kDa. The protein sequence is highly species specific. The homology between the mouse and human IFN gamma is 40%. Furthermore, the protein IFN gamma shares minimal homology with IFN alpha and IFN beta. IFN gamma is a globular dimer with flattened elliptical shaped subunits. It consists of six alpha-helices that are held together by short non-helical sequences and does not contain any beta-sheets. At its N-terminal region, the protein contains a three amino acid sequence (Cys-Tyr-Cys) that are removed during posttranslational modifications.IFN alpha has several biological activities such as antiviral, antiproliferative, immunoregulatory, and proinflammatory. It induces the production of other cytokines, and up regulates the expression of Class I and II MHC antigens, Fc receptor, and leukocyte adhesion molecul
