| Description | &beta,2-Microglobulin (&beta,2-M) is a low molecular weight protein (12 kDa). It is found on the surface of all nucleated cells as part of the MHC1 complex. The plasma concentration is usually in the range 1-2.5mg/LOther than its MHC1 association its function is unknown. It shows considerable sequence homology with parts of the constant regions of IgG heavy and light chains. In multiple myeloma, serum levels of beta 2 M tend to parallel the paraprotein levels and levels at presentation are an important prognostic indicator. It is excreted through the glomerulus and reabsorbed through the proximal tubules of the kidney. Any proximal tubular damage will lead to a large excess of &beta,2-M in the urine, for example in heavy metal poisoning. |
| Host | Sheep |
| Specificity | This product gives a single arc when tested by IEP and 2D-IEP against human serum with an elevated ?2-M level. Identity is confirmed by double diffusion (Ouchterlony) vs human serum with an elevated ?2-M level and a known anti-human ?2-microglobulin. |

| Application | Immunoelectrophoresis (IEP), Radioimmunoassay (RIA), Rocket Immunoelectrophoresis (IEP) |
| Application Notes | RID and Rocket IEP: 6uL antiserum/cm?? gel vs 5uL neat-1/10 dilution human serum (beta 2-microglobulin content 50mg/L)Double diffusion: 10uL antiserum vs 5uL serum (beta 2-microglobulin content 50mg/L)IEP: 100uL antiserum vs 5uL plasma (beta 2-microglobulin content 50mg/L)The use of 3% PEG 6000 with 1.2%agarose in a suitable buffer (such as TBE or Tris-barbital pH >8.2) is recommended. Suitability for use in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays and Western blot has not been assessed butuse in such assays should not necessarily be excluded. |
