| Description | The ion channels activated by glutamate are typically divided into two classes. Thosethat are sensitive to N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) are designated NMDA receptors(NMDAR). The NMDAR plays an essential role in memory, neuronal development and ithas also been implicated in several disorders of the central nervous system includingAlzheimer’s, epilepsy and ischemic neuronal cell death. Overexpression of the NR2Bsubunit of the receptor has been associated with increases in learning and memorywhile aged, memory impaired animals have deficiencies in NR2B expression. Tyr1472on NR2B is phosphorylated and this may lead to the increased expression of theNMDAR at the synapse that plays a role in synaptic plasticity. |
