Background

The cytoskeleton acts, as the name suggests, as a support system for the eukaryotic cell. It is made of filamentous structures that consist of a number of different proteins. Besides the form-giving function it carries out, the cytoskeleton acts as anchoring system for various cell-organelles and also allows movement along these cell structures. Main components of the cytoskeleton are the actin filament that consist of the protein actin, which is a key protein in vesicle transport and form giving. The transport resembles the gliding of rolls along a hanging cable, though the process is ATP consuming. Another structure is the microtubuli that consists of dynesin and kinesin which are involved in cellular transport. They are commonly organized by the centrosome. And finally, the intermediary filaments are a distinct structure that has similar functions as actin filaments, but mostly in the nucleus and in the plasma membrane. Important intermediary filaments include the proteins vimentin, keratin and lamin. Using gel electrophoresis the proteins of the cytoskeleton can be separated and detected.
