HSV-1: Interaction of autophagy and MHC class I presentation of antigens

Area: Virology
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) viral proteins are usually processed by the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I presentation pathway. This occurs after autophagy has facilitated this process. A second pathway is triggered later during infection. A recent study suggests a complex interaction between the two pathways. The study utilized an antibody against the microtubule-associated protein MAP1LC3B.  » Read more

Influences of iron deficiency on photosynthesis and growth of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

A recent study investigated the impact of iron deficiency on bioenergetic pathways in Chlamydomonas, a genus of green alga. The researchers found that acetate-grown iron-limited cells maintained high growth rates by suppressing photosynthesis and increasing respiration instead. In order to study this phenomenon the researcher used antibodies that are available on antibodies-online, namely an anti-plasma membrane ferroxidase (or anti-FOX1) antibody and an anti-COXII - mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit II antibody.  » Read more

Matrix metalloproteinases reduce beta-2-adrenergic receptor density and cause spontaneous hypertension

Enhanced matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity has been observed in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). A recent study reports, that MMPs may contribute to the reduced density of the extracellular domain of beta-2-AR in blood vessels and to the increased arteriolar tone of SHRs compared with normotensive rats. The study utilized this anti-beta-2-AR antibody that recognizes the N-terminal region of the protein and can be used for ELISA and western blotting.  » Read more

Magnetic beads coupled antibodies for depletion of unwanted plasma proteins

The research in the human plasmatic proteins field expands very rapidly. The technical challenge to analyze this proteome stems from the large quantity of plasmatic proteins. Some proteins are highly abundant, such as Human Serum Albumin (HSA), and prevent the detection of rare proteins. The depletion of HSA, by an anti-HSA antibodies, allows the detection of such rare proteins which could be medicinal targets or biological markers. This »anti-HSA antibody may be coupled to magnetic beads to be used in blood research for the depletion of HSA by applying magnetism.

Beta ATPase as an indicator of an organism's health

ATPases (or ATP synthases) are membrane-bound enzyme complexes that combine ATP synthesis with the transport of protons across a membrane. They thereby harness energy from a proton gradient and produce ATP. The function of ATPase can be utilized as an indicator of general health and functioning in studies, as in the case of virus infected phytoplankton in a recent publication. The study utilized an antibody against the beta subunit of ATP synthase in plants and micro-organisms.  » Read more
