Phenotypic correction of murine hemophilia A using an stem cell-based therapy

Scientists of the Nevada Cancer Institute in Las Vegas (USA) injected endothelial cells and endothelial progenitor cells, both derived from induced pluripotent stem cells, into the liver of mice suffering from hemophilia A. Hemophilia A is caused by mutations within the gene encoding Factor VIII. The transplated mice survived longer than 3 month despite several times of induced bleeding. FVIII levels rose upt to 12% the wild type amount, correcting the hemophilia phenotype.
