The use of feeder cells for the cultivation of transplantable epithelial sheets

Human mesenchymal stem cells are suitable to engineer epithelial sheets and thus circumvent the use of potentially hazardous xenologic feeder cells as Masahiro Omoto and colleagues from the Keio University School of Medicine in Tokyo (Japan) discovered. Note: The authors used the following antibodies for their research: Cytokeratin 4 antibody (ABIN98112) and Cytokeratin 3 (K3)(AE5) antibody (ABIN108617).
The mesenchymal stem cell feeder cells expressed keratinocyte growth factor, hepatocyte growth factor and N-cadherin. The scientists successfully cultivated corneal cell sheets with those feeder cells expressing K3, K15, p63 alpha and ABCG2. This way, rabbits with defective corneal limbus could be cured.
