Broadly neutralizing antibodies protect against hepatitis C virus quasispecies challenge

Human monoclonal antibodies were found by scientists from the Scripps Research Institute in California (USA), that neutralise hepatitis C virus isolates of various genotypes.
In a human liver-chimeric mouse model, the antibodies were able protect the system against heterologous HCV quasispecies challenge.
A major problem for the design of a vaccine or establishment of immunotherapy against hepatitis C virus is the extreme genetic variability of the virus. This study demonstrates that broadly neutralising antibodies to HCV can protect against heterologous viral infection. Despite the genetic diversity, it might be possible to develop aprophylactic vaccine against HCV.
