Lhx2 Selector Activity Specifies Cortical Identity and Suppresses Hippocampal Organiser Fate

Lhx2 acts as a classic selector gene and essential intrinsic determinant of cortical identity, as researchers from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai in India demonstrated by working with mouse genetic mosaics and timed inactivations.
The development of the cerebral cortex is initiated by specification of the neuroepithelium to a cortical fate. The Lhx2 selector activity is restricted to a critical time frame early in development in which stem cells embrace the cortical neuroepithelium. The epithelium acts cell-autonomously to specify cortical identity and suppress alternative fates in a spatially dependent manner.
