Initiating and Cancer-Propagating Cells in TEL-AML1-Associated Childhood Leukemia

Area: Oncology
A research team from the University of Oxford (UK) identified a cell compartment in leukemic children that can propagate leukemia when transplanted in mice. The team analysed the clonal evolution of a form of childhood precursor-B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.
The disease is defined by a chromosomal translocation, leading to the production of a TEL-AML1 fusion gene. The TEL-AML1 fusion probably functions as a first-hit mutation and provides the preleukemic cell with modified self-renewal and survival properties.
