Hepatitis E Virus and Chronic Hepatitis in Organ Transplant Recipients

Scientists of the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire in Toulouse (France) identified 14 cases of acute hepatitis E infections in patients with either liver transplants, kidney transplants or kidney and pancreas transplants.
The patients were confirmed positive for serum hepatitis E virus (HEV) RNA. 8 of the 14 cases developed chronic hepatitis, recognised by prolonged elevated aminotransferase levels, serum HEV RNA and histologic characteristics of chronic hepatitis. The lymphocyte count of all lymphocytes and of CD2, CD3 and CD4 T-cells was significantly lower if a chronic disease manifested in the patient. Also, the time between transplantation and diagnosis was significantly shorter in these cases.
The hepatitis E virus was previously assumed to be responsible for acute hepatitis, however not of progressive and chronic hepatitis.
