Endothelins are vascular-derived axonal guidance cues for developing sympathetic neurons
Areas: Neurology, Signalling
Vascular-derived endothelins seem to be essential to axonal pathfinding and thus for the developing nervous system.
In mouse embryos, the endothelin family member Edn3 was shown to act through the endothelin receptor EdnrA and to direct the extension of axons of some sympathetic neurons from the superior cervical ganglion to the external carotid artery. The external carotid artery is a gateway to select targets.
Newborn sympathetic neurons seem to distinguish and choose between distinct vascular trajectories to innervate their appropriate end organs.
