Infected Cell Polypeptide 27 (ICP27) in the replication of Herpes Simplex Viruses

Area: Virology
A study published this month investigated infections of cells by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) using a HSV ICP27 (Infected cell polypeptide 27) antibody, which is an essential and multifunctional regulator of viral gene expression. HSV infection triggers host cell shutoff whereby mRNAs are degraded and cellular protein synthesis is diminished. However, ICP27 apparently does not affect poly(A)-binding Protein 1 (PABP1), a protein required for translational initiation.
