- Background
-
Wnt1 is a ligand for members of the frizzled family of seven transmembrane receptors. In some developmental processes, it is also a ligand for the coreceptor RYK, thus triggering Wnt signaling. It is a probable developmental protein and may be a signaling molecule important in CNS development. Wnt1 is likely to signal over only few cell diameters. It ha s a proeminent role in the induction of the mesencephalon and cerebellum. It may play a crucial role in the morphogenesis of the neural tube and/or the early stages of CNS development. It has a role in osteoblast function and bone development.
