Coiled, a member of the leukocyte antigen 6 (Ly6) family, is crucial for septate junction formation and blood-brain barrier integrity.
coilin is required for normal Cajal body organization in Drosophila but is not essential for viability or production of functional gametes
The transcriptional and splicing changes observed in coilin mutants are not accompanied by gross phenotypic abnormalities or dramatically altered stress responses, supporting a role for coilin in fine tuning gene expression
Physical properties of deletion mutants indicate that coilin might consist of an N-terminal globular domain, a central highly disordered domain and a C-terminal domain containing a Tudor-like structure adjacent to a disordered C terminus. [coilin]
interaction between viral protein and coilin
The existence of chromatolysis and eccentric nuclei in SMA (show SMN1 Proteins) motor neurons correlates with Cajal body disruption and nucleolar relocalization of coil in, a Cajal body marker.
VRK1 (show VRK1 Proteins) is a novel regulator of CBs (show CBS Proteins) dynamics and stability in cell cycle by protecting coilin from ubiquitination and degradation in the proteasome, and propose a model of CB dynamics.
Data indicate that annexin A2 (show ANXA2 Proteins) overexpression in microsatellite instability (MIN) cells induces disassembly and colocalization of coilin with centromeres.
The study shows that coilin-KO human cells that lack Cajal bodies are phenotypically normal with respect to telomere homeostasis.
Coilin couples snRNA and snoRNA biogenesis, making cajal bodies the cellular hub of small ncRNA metabolism.
The interaction of SMN (show STMN1 Proteins) with the spliceosomal SmD1 (show SNRPD1 Proteins) (also known as SNRPD1 (show SNRPD1 Proteins)), severely decreases SMN (show STMN1 Proteins)-coilin interaction and prevents Cajal body assembly.
Results suggest that UBL5 (show PIN1 Proteins) could be targeted to Cajal bodies (CBs (show CBS Proteins)) via its interaction with coilin.
coilin is subjected to regulated specific proteolysis by calpain, and this processing may play a role in the regulation of coilin activity and Cajal body formation
Data indicate coilin involvement in the processing of telomerase RNA both in vitro and in vivo.
investigated the role of coilin in the DNA damage response and found that coilin reduction correlated with significantly increased levels of soluble gammaH2AX (show H2AFX Proteins) in etoposide treated U2OS cells
These findings demonstrate that coilin modifications or levels impact artificial reporter splicing, possibly by influencing small nuclear ribonucleoprotein biogenesis.
Putative role of coilin in formation of complexes with ribosomal RNA synthesis/processing components is discussed.
evolutionary conservation of coilin from plants to animals suggests that the protein plays an important role, perhaps coordinating the activities of various RNA-processing machineries
The protein encoded by this gene is an integral component of Cajal bodies (also called coiled bodies). Cajal bodies are nuclear suborganelles of varying number and composition that are involved in the post-transcriptional modification of small nuclear and small nucleolar RNAs. The N-terminus of the coilin protein directs its self-oligomerization while the C-terminus influences the number of nuclear bodies assembled per cell. Differential methylation and phosphorylation of coilin likely influences its localization among nuclear bodies and the composition and assembly of Cajal bodies. This gene has pseudogenes on chromosome 4 and chromosome 14.
