Background Three cell membrane receptor tyrosine kinases, Flt (also designated VEGF-R1), Flk1(also designated VEGFR2) and Flt4 (also designated VEGFR3), putatively involved inthe growth of endothelial cells, are characterized by the presence of sevenimmuno-globulin-like sequences in their extracellular domain. On the basis of structuralsimilarity to Flt and Flk1, it has been speculated that Flt4 might represent a thirdreceptor for other VEGF or a VEGF-related ligand.
