Specificity NB100-64369 recognizes Pekin duck CD8 alpha (CD8a), shown to be expressed by thymocytes, splenocytes, peripheral lymphoid cells and the vast majority of bursal cells. Since the majority of avian immune studies have been carried out on chickens, relatively little is known about the immune system of ducks, though there is a resemblance between the main lymphoid organs: the spleen, thymus and bursa of Fabricius. At the cellular level, studies have shown that like mammalian T cells, duck lymphocytes are responsive to phytohaemagglutinin (PHA). Double-staining with clone Du CD8-1 and duck IgY light chain clone 14A3, revealed the presence of a CD8^high /14A3^- cytotoxic T cell population and a CD8^low/14A3^+ B cell population in duck spleen and also revealed a high percentage of CD8^+/14A3^+ cells in duck bursa ^(1).

Background The CD8 antigen is a cell surface glycoprotein found on most cytotoxic T lymphocytesthat mediates efficient cell to cell interactions within the immune system. The CD8antigen, acting as a coreceptor, and the T cell receptor on the T lymphocyte recognizeantigen displayed by an antigen presenting cell (APC) in the context of class I MHCmolecules. The functional coreceptor is either a homodimer composed of two alphachains, or a heterodimer composed of one alpha and one beta chain. Both alpha andbeta chains share significant homology to immunoglobulin variable light chains.
