Background Transportin 1 (TNPO1)/karyopherin β2/importin β2 is a ~90 kDa protein that mediates the nucleocytoplasmic transport of molecules that lack the classical NLS (nuclear localization sequence), including hnRNP's. Mammalian transportin 1 exports RNA from the nucleus, whereas its yeast counterpart, Kap104p, imports molecules. Transportin 1 associates with Ran or related protein in an ATP-regenerating system to translocate proteins containing a 38 amino acid basic domain (M9).Synonyms: Importin beta-2, KPNB2, Karyopherin beta-2, M9 region interaction protein, MIP1, TRN
