Alternate Names: Tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily member 16, Low-affinity nerve growth factor receptor, NGF receptor, Gp80-LNGFR, p75 ICD, Low affinity neurotrophin receptor p75NTR, CD271, NGFR, TNFRSF16
Description: NGFR (p75NTR or low affinity neurotrophin receptor) binds neurotrophins including NGF, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) and NT-4. Nerve growth factor (NGF) is important for the development , differentation, and survival of a variety of neuronal and non-neuronal cells. NGF action is mediated by binding to two distinct receptors, the high affinity p140 and low affinity p75 NTR (NGFR). NGFR, a TNF-R superfamily member, is reported to mediate NGF-induced apoptosis.
