- Background
- PPARs (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors) are a family of transcription factors belonging tothe nuclear hormone receptor superfamily. Widely expressed in vertebrates, PPARs play critical roles inmetabolism and differentiation of a number of cell types. The PPAR gamma subtype was originally identified as a factor binding to a fatty acid specific enhancer of the aP2 gene. PPAR-gamma actions are mediated by three isoforms resulting from alternative promoter selection andalternative splicing. PPAR-gamma1 is widely expressed while PPAR-gamma2 expression is restricted to adipose tissueand PPAR-gamma3 expression is restricted to adipose tissue, macrophage, and colon.PPAR gamma participates in adipose cell differentiation and energy storage (Ref.1).Recently, these roles of PPARgamma have focused attention on PPARgamma as a target of the anti-diabeticthiazolidinedione class of drugs (Ref.2).
