- Major prion protein (PrP) also known as CD230 (cluster of differentiation 230) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the PRNP gene. The major prion protein is expressed in the brain and several other tissues. Two distinct major conformational forms of PrP have been identified in the nervous system. The usual cellular form is denoted PrPC (for cellular or common form). Another form, PrPSc (for scrapie), has an identical amino acid sequence, but is folded into a different shape or conformation.
