Antigen
Alternative Name CD11b (ITGAM Antibody Abstract)
Background Developing lymphocytes often display a complex pattern of surface antigens, some of which are acquired at certain stages of development into functionally mature forms while others are lost. However, the presence of these CD antigens is not restricted to cells of the immune system and they are found on practically all known cell types, sometimes only expressed at certain stages or under certain conditions e.g. after cell activation or in certain disease patterns. The biological functions of many CD proteins are still unknown but expression of some CD antigens is influenced by cytokines and in some cases binding of ligands to CD antigens has been shown to modulate cytokine expression. Moreover, some of the known CD antigens are identical with cytokine receptors while others appear to carry out cytokine receptor-like functions or are involved in modulating the biological activities of cytokines. These surface antigens were identified initially by monoclonal antibodies and thus the designations of the antibodies were often used as synonyms for the cell surface proteins they detected. Several CD antigens also exist in soluble forms.
Pathways Apoptosis, Activation of Innate immune Response, Toll-Like Receptors Cascades, Activated T Cell Proliferation
