Alternative Name Tau (MAPT Antibody Abstract)
Background In addition to tubulin, microtubules have other components named Microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs), which include the high molecular MAPs (200-400 kDa) and the Tau proteins (55-70 kDa). These proteins co-purify with the microtubules during repeated cycles of microtubule assembly and disassembly. Both MAPs and Tau proteins extend from the side of the microtubules. They form cross-bridges in neurons and bind tubulin by their C-terminal region. The heterogeneity in the molecular weight of Tau proteins is due to post-translational modifications and different numbers of tandem repeats in their C-terminal domain. Tau isoforms are selectively expressed in unique subsets of neurons and regulated during development. The highly phosphorylated Tau proteins have also been detected in the neurofibrillary tangles of Alzheimer's patients. This antibody is routinely tested by western blot analysis.
