Urine UPIb levels may be useful for predicting the risk of recurrent urinary tract infections in patients diagnosed with their first UTI (show AMBP Proteins) and may also be considered as a noninvasive screening test for vesicoureteral reflux.
established the genomic organization of the UPIb gene
Loss of uroplakin Ib expression is associated with bladder carcinomas
Loss of uroplakin Ib expression by CpG methylation of Sp1/NFkappaB-binding motifs within the proximal promoter is associated with urothelial tumors
The biopsy-induced increase in the expression of UPIb and other genes encoding membrane proteins supports the possible importance of the membrane structure and stability during implantation.
Upk1b expression is critical for urothelial plaque stability, maturation, differentiation, and homeostasis of urothelium. Report CAKUT in Upk1b knockout mice.
The despites a lower level of expression, UPIb maintain its plaque association in urothelial preneoplastic lesions.
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the transmembrane 4 superfamily, also known as the tetraspanin family. Most of these members are cell-surface proteins that are characterized by the presence of four hydrophobic domains. The proteins mediate signal transduction events that play a role in the regulation of cell development, activation, growth and motility. This encoded protein is found in the asymmetrical unit membrane (AUM) where it can form a complex with other transmembrane 4 superfamily proteins. It may play a role in normal bladder epithelial physiology, possibly in regulating membrane permeability of superficial umbrella cells or in stabilizing the apical membrane through AUM/cytoskeletal interactions. The use of alternate polyadenylation sites has been found for this gene.
