- Target
- Pro-Hepcidin
- Alternative Name
- pro Hepcidin
- Background
- FUNCTION: Seems to act as a signaling molecule involved in the maintenance of iron homeostasis. Seems to be required in conjunction with HFE to regulate both intestinal iron absorption and iron storage in macrophages. May also have antimicrobial activity. SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Secreted. Tissue specificity: Highly expressed in the liver and to a much lesser extent in the heart.
