Background
- Original studies investigating the properties of chicken Interferon (chIFN), revealed properties similar to mammalian IFN type I (IFNI), and it has since become apparent that there are at least three distinct chicken interferon proteins, designated as chIFN-alpha, chIFN-beta and chIFN-gamma. chIFN-gamma was first identified, when supernatant from chicken spleen cells stimulated with concanavalin A (ConA ), displayed macrophage-activating factor (MAF) activity - the principle function of mammalian type II IFNgamma. Several independent studies have since supported the existence of this chicken homolog, by the cloning of IFN-gamma cDNA from activated chicken T cells and demonstrating that recombinant chicken IFNgamma strongly upregulates the expression of MHC class II and iNOS genes.Synonyms: IFN-gamma, gamma IFN
