    Background
Sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase 3, Calcium pump 3, ATP2A3,SERCA3 belongs to the family of P-type ion translocating ATPases and is responsible for maintaining a Ca2+ concentration gradient between the cytosol and the endoplasmic reticulum. SERCA3 transports two Ca2+ ions in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) per ATP molecule hydrolyzed1-3. SERCA proteins are transmembrane and consist of a single polypeptide chain folded into four major domains. SERCA proteins are encoded by 3 genes, ATP2A1, ATP2A2, and ATP2A3. All three genes produce several alternate transcripts and protein isoforms.SERCA3 protein is mostly expressed in non-muscle cells, especially in endothelial and hematopoietic cells. Minor expression can be detected in muscle cells2,3.SERCA3 knockout mice exhibit prolonged tail bleeding time and rebleeding1. Mutations in the SERCA3 gene are associated with type 2 diabetes. The protein is also implicated in several cardiac disorders2,3.
