Background
A disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs 4 is an enzyme encoded by the ADAMTS4 gene. ADAMTS4 is the shortest known ADAMTS, lacking the C-terminal domain and is the only non-glycosylated ADAMTS. This protein cleaves aggrecan, a cartilage proteoglycan, and may be involved in its turnover. The protein may play an important role in the destruction of aggrecan in arthritic diseases. It could also be a critical factor in the exacerbation of neurodegeneration in Alzheimer disease.
