    CD121b / IL1R2

    Background

CDw121b is a 65 kD member of the immunoglobulin superfamily also known as IL-1 receptor (IL-1R) type II. The IL-1R family is composed of three proteins: IL-1R type I, IL-1R type II, and the widely expressed IL-1R AcP. Both IL-1R type I and type II bind IL-1 alpha and IL-1 beta, although with differing affinities. The high affinity complex consists of IL-1R type I and IL-1R AcP, whereas IL-1 binds to IL-1R type II with low affinity. The IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RA) can bind to both IL-1R type I and II. IL-1R type II is expressed at low levels on B cells, monocytes/macrophages, neutrophils, basal epithelia of the skin, and T cells. Binding of IL-1 to the high affinity IL-1 receptor mediates thymocyte and T cell activation, fibroblast proliferation, and induction of acute phase protein production. Binding of IL-1 to CDw121b appears to be dispensable for IL-1 signaling and may negatively regulate IL-1 responses acting as a quotdecoy quot receptor.Synonyms: CD121 antigen-like family member B, CDw121b, IL-1R-2, IL-1R-beta, IL1RB, Interleukin-1 receptor type II
