Description Members of the protein kinase C (PKC) family play a key regulatory role in a variety ofcellular functions including cell growth and differentiation, gene expression, hormonesecretion and membrane function. PKCs were originally identified as serine/threonineprotein kinases whose activity was dependent on calcium and phospholipids. Diacylglycerols (DAG) and tumor promoting phorbol esters bind to and activate PKC. PKCscan be subdivided into at least two major classes including conventional (c) PKC isoforms(alpha, betaI, betaII and gamma) and novel (n) PKC isoforms (delta, epsilon, zeta, eta andtheta). Patterns of expression for each PKC isoform differ among tissues and PKC familymembers exhibit clear differences in their cofactor dependencies. For instance, the kinaseactivities of nPKC delta and epilon are independent of Ca2+. On the other hand, nPKC deltaand epsilon, as well as all of the cPKC members, possess phorbol esterbinding activitiesand kinase activities.
Specificity PKC alpha pAb detects endogenous levels of PKC alpha protein. Species: Human, Mouse, Rat. Others not tested.
