Background
- Cytokeratin 17, also known as Keratin, type I cytoskeletal 17 (K17) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the KRT17 gene. Keratin 17 (K17) is a differentiation-specific keratin expressed in the nail bed, hair follicle, sebaceous gland and other epidermal appendages. 1 The KRT17 gene is 5 kb long with 8 exons. Mutations in the gene encoding this protein lead to Jackson-Lawler type pachyonychia congenita and steatocystoma multiplex. Cytokeratin 17 synthesis seems to be a marker of basal cell differentiation in complex epithelia and therefore indicative of a certain type of epithelial stem cells. 2
