Background: DSCR1 protein influences cardiac and nervous system development (1). DSCR1 is abundant in the brain, heart, and skeletal muscle. Overexpression of DSCR1 may play a role in the pathogenesis of Down syndrome, in particular mental retardation and/or cardiac defects. DSCR1 inhibits calcineurin-dependent transcriptional responses by binding to the catalytic domain of calcineurin A. Human DSCR1 maps to gene locus 21q22.1-q22.2.
